Description

Commissioners of Legal Enquiry in the West Indies, 1826, volume 6, Commissioners Henry, Coneys and Dwarris; Secretary Hill. Volume contains correspondence and other papers many of which are of an administrative nature and concerned with matters such as preparation of reports, accounts, salaries, expenses, travel arrangements, leave of absence and the provision of accommodation in London for the finalisation of reports. Other subjects covered are as follows:

  • personal attacks on commissioners;
  • query as to whether slaves included in a mortgage can be manumitted without the consent of the mortgagee;
  • allegations of A C Johnstone against the lieutenant governor of Demerara;
  • case of Joseph Pollock;
  • observations on changes considered desirable to introduce into the administration of justice in the Leeward Islands;
  • manuscript copy of special report on Bermuda;
  • delays by local officials in providing information required;
  • a probate case concerning the estate of Rowland Burton referred to the commissioners at Antigua [with numerous papers including a pedigree of the Burton family and proceedings of the Court of Chancery at Antigua];
  • question relating to Demerara inheritance law;
  • brief notes on certain Acts: 4 Geo IV cap 15, 'to take away clergy from offenders in rape on slaves'; 4 Geo IV cap 16, 'to amend the Act enabling persons of free condition to give evidence'; 5 Geo IV, cap 24, 'for removing impediments to the manumission of slaves by owners having only a limited interest'; 5 Geo IV Cap 22, 'to prevent levies on slaves on Saturday'.
