Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Calais.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
1) The petitioners seek discharge from customs paid at Calais for cloth bought in England, considering they are free in their town of all customs and that they remain since the conquest and have suffered much grief and danger, and still stay for the safeguard of the same. They show that any of them in England for the buying of cloth and wool pay all English customs and subsidies for the said cloth brought to Calais for the maintenance of the town.2) They seek a lodge over the hall appurtenant to the hall they have had since ancient times, which lodge the treasurer of Calais does not suffer them to have. For this they retain a small rent from this lodge, which costs the king more to repair than it is worth in good times. They also show how the enemy rules over them harshly and watches over their people in the town.
Nature of endorsement
[None.]
