Description
Petitioners
Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel and Surrey.
Name(s)
Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, Richard
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Richard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, states that one William de Garenne, calling himself Prior of Castle Acre, after he had resigned his office into the hands of the Prior of Lewes, as he should, and a new prior had been appointed, made a second resignation into the hands of the pope, who then made a provision of the office of prior to him, and he bound the priory to pay a large sum of money for the first fruits of the priory. The pope's collectors are now collecting the revenues of the priory and have excommunicated the monks. As the Priory is of the patronage of the Earl of Arundel, and William de Garenne was never lawfully in possession of it by the pope's provision, he asks for a writ to the papal collectors to cease from demanding this money.
Nature of endorsement
A prohibition is to be made to the papal collector to cease utterly from making any levy, process or demand against the Prior of Castle Acre, his fellow monks, and their successors in the said house at any time in future for the first fruits or the sums mentioned in this petition.
Places mentioned
Castle Acre, [Norfolk]

People mentioned
