Description
Petitioners
None specified
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The petition states that many abbots and priors of the abbeys and priories of the realm, and many masters and wardens of colleges and hospitals, have, for favour or profit, charged their houses with corrodies, pensions and other annual charges, to the impoverishment of the houses, the detriment of the divine service and alms and other works of charity for which they were founded, and the frustration of the purposes of their founders. It asks that a remedy might be ordained in the present parliament, that no abbot, prior, master or warden should burden his house with such a charge, or with any other unreasonable debt, without the permission of his bishop and his patron or founder, and if he should do so, that the letters for this might be considered null and void. It also asks that any such corrody or pension hitherto made might not be binding on the successor of the head of any house.
