Reference
SC 8/44/2168
Date
[c. 1319]
Description
Petitioners
Executors of Richard de Kellawe, Bishop of Durham.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The executors state that at the parliament held at York they petitioned for right to be done concerning the wardship of several manors in Durham which Balliol and his ancestors held of the bishops. The manors came into the hand of the earl of Warwick. Following the death of the earl, Bishop Kellawe seized the manors in wardship but was ousted by the king. Kellawe petitioned for its return and sued until his death. The executors request that justice be done so that they can settle the bishop's debts, and request an answer.
Nature of endorsement
Because the earl held of the king and not of the bishop, and the king is in possession of the wardship it is considered that the action is not to be granted to the executors.
Places mentioned
Everwik (York)
Barnard Castle, [County Durham]
Gainford, [County Durham]
Quernington (Whorlton), [County Durham]
Longnewton, [County Durham]
Nicholl (Lincoln), [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
John de Balliol
[Guy Beauchamp], Earl of Warwick
[Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick].
Note
The petition refers to the executors petitioning at the last parliament at York. There were parliaments at York in May 1319 and January 1320, and further parliaments in 1322. It seems more likely that the petition dates to 1319-20.
