Report of Edward Willes on Stephen Broadbent convicted at the 'last' Yorkshire Lent Assizes in York, for stealing a brown gelding, property of James Scolefield. The judge apologises that severe illness has led to the delay in replying to Lord Sydney (Sydney's letter dated 5 October 1786) and he is now obliged to use a secretary. Grounds for clemency: none given. Initial sentence; death, commuted to transportation in view of his youth and it appearing to be his first offence. Recommendation: 'I have nothing further to say in his behalf'. Folios 379-380. See also HO 47/4/69, folios 386-387.
