Report of Francis Buller on 1 collective petition (10 people, including the prisoner) for mercy on behalf of William Wellings convicted at the Christmas Lancashire Assizes in 1785 of stealing goods, property of John Moss. There is also a testimony of Thomas Wright, the Lancaster Castle physician, on the health of the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, has been imprisoned since his trial and for 6 months beforehand (session was held by adjournment), is very sick with incurable dropsy and will die if transported, of former good character and has en elderly wife. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: free pardon.
