Folio 278: Stormont to Weymouth. A long talk with Vergennes covered much the same ground as in f.227. The sending of du Chaffault's squadron was not consistent with Vergennes' professions of peaceful intentions and gave encouragement to the rebels. A smaller Frenchsquadron of ships of the line would be a match for Britain's forces in America, which consisted of frigates. Vergennes replied that the squadron posed no threat and was needed to protect French trade and interests in the West Indies. He complained of insults by British men of war to France, by pursuing enemy ships into French harbours. Stormont complained of help given by the French islands to the rebels. They both agreed that the arming of each other's country was purely defensive and justified.
