Folio 274: Stormont to Weymouth. Vergennes told him that he regretted the retirement of Grimaldi, who was a wise and moderate minister. Now that Pombal's dislike of him was no longer an obstacle, a settlement should be easier but he did not think that Pombal wanteda settlement and was relying on Britain. He said that Grimaldi's successor, Florida Blanca, was a moderate man. Stormont had replied that Spain should propose an agreement on limits but Vergennes said Portugal must offer satisfaction first, blaming Pombal's incomprehensible behaviour. Stormont reports news of a dreadful fire at Brest, which started at the house of the galley-slaves.
