Folio 135: Carteret to Wich. Sorry treaty not finished before leaving Moscow. French say that on authority of Brummer and Lestock things will be different in Russian ministry on return to Petersburg and their whole force will be directed to defeating our Treaty. They want an advantageous treaty of Commerce. Mardefeld and Petzold are their greatest enemies. The former is said to have offered King of Prussia's guarantee of Finland to Czarina, in exchange for hers for Silesia. Declined French ambassador in Stockholm exerting himself in favour of Duke of Deux Ponts. D'Alion assurances of France's disposition towards the Administrator not to relied on. French party want to choose the Duke of Deux Ponts in sudden turmoil before Czarina has made proposals about the Administrator, put him at head of army, with help from Denmark whose princess they propose he will marry, and reconquer Finland. Dated Whitehall, 4 Jan 1742.
