Description

Short title: Attorney General v Sneyd.

Plaintiff(s): The Attorney General, upon the relation of the mayor, bayliffes, and burgesses of Newcastle-under-Lyme, and the inhabitants and poor people of said town.

Defendant(s): Ralph Sneyd, Edward Mainwaringe, Peter Broughton, Thomas Heminges, William Abnett, Peter Gilworth, Edward Heylin.

Subject of depositions: Government of the burrow of Newcastle-under-Lyme (Staffordshire) under the defendants. Value of the lands belonging to the corporation. Constitution of the corporation. Election of burgesses. Value of tolls of markets, etc. Value of limestone gotten in the wastes of said borough. Also touching trusts for the use of the poor given by William Sutton, Thomas Burslem, Sir John Bowyer, Walter Bagnall, and others, during defendants' government of said borough. Quo warranto brought by King Charles II against the old corporation. Touching a new charter granted by King James II under the Great Seale of England and the Seale of the Dutchy of Lancaster, under which the defendants were appointed "for the government of a burrow, whereof many of them were not soe much as inhabitants" and who "turned out the ancient members of said corporation" etc. Election of members of Parliament" etc.
