Description

Short title: Attorney General v Molineux.

Plaintiff(s): Attorney General.

Defendant(s): John Molineux, John Forster, Rice Hilcotes Milner, Thomas Gaddesbye, Gilbert Francis, Nicholas Goddard, John Noble, Robert Newton, Ann Wilson.

Subject of depositions: Alleged infringement of ancient custom of "suit and grist" to six water corn-mills in the borough of Newark, formerly belonging to the Bishops of Lincoln, and touching the manors of Newark, Farndon, Balderton, Coddington, Winthorp and Northgate, and the wapentake, hundred, and soke of Newark. Is the King lord of such manors? Are the towns of N. Clifton. S. Clifton, Thorney, Wiggesley, Brodholme, Harbye, Spawdforth, Gretton, S. Scarle, Besthorpe, N. and S. Collingham, Lanford, Winthorp, Darnthorp, Staunton, Kilvington, Flawboro', Sibthorp, Shelton, Elston, Stoke, Thorpe, Hawton, Farndon, Balderton, Coddington, Barneby, Cotham, and Northgate, near Newark, within wapentake, or hundred and soke of Newark. Customs of the manor of Newark. Touching also the lordship of Hawton, near Newark, Beacon Mill, in Newark, and "guerns" and malt mills there. [The names of Antony Foster, farmer of the six mills, Hugh Kerchyver, of Balderton, James Whalley, Isabel Countess Dowager of Rutland, Sir William Cecil Lord Burghley, and Edward late Earl of Rutland, farmers of the six mills, Mr Goodchild, timber out of Sherwood Forest for repair of the mills and castle of Newark, tithes of Stoke, Sir Anthony Mofforth, curate of Coddington, and mills at Rolston and Fiskerton, are mentioned].
