(2) 'Index showing the Progress of the Ordnance Survey of the South Eastern Counties of England': map of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex, forming a graphic index to the sheets of the Ordnance Survey one-inch New Series, six-inch County Series and town plans at the 'five foot' [1:1,056] and 1:500 scales; also showing railways and district boundaries. Skeleton reference tables to the progress of the survey have not been filled in. Scale: 1 inch to 4 miles. Coloured MS additions show the boundaries of military districts, the sites of defence works in Surrey and Kent, and other information related to the defence of London. The space for the date is blank apart from an '18', presumably the first two digits of the year; the War Office docket book (which was the original means of reference to the War Office maps) gives the date [presumably that of the MS additions] as 1896. (1) Small MS reference table to the defence works shown on item (2).
