Description

Accounts and Pay Lists of Sir Joseph Paxton.

  • Receipts for Gratuities: Nos 1-249.
  • A pre-printed book of receipts. The payments covered by these relate to the termination of service of the men of the Army Works Corps.
  • In most cases these give the man's name, his number in the pay register, the amount paid and date, and the man's signature or mark. Also included on some receipts are his trade and the name of the vessel on which he returned home.
  • A small number of the receipts refer to men who died. In their case payment was made to a relative. The name, relationship and address are usually given. In addition, date and place of death and details of children may appear.
  • There are also a few letters and receipts referring to men who were invalids but who waived their right to a disability pension in favour of a lump sum payment.
