Crime: Larceny.
Initial Sentence: Seven years transportation.
Gaoler's Report: Thrice before convicted of felony.
Outcome: Free Pardon.
Petitions and letters: Letter from Visiting Magistrate, J L Hudson, sent from East Riding House of Correction, Beverley, forwarding the Surgeon’s medical report on Richard Garbutt’s bad state of health. ‘Afflicted with ulceration of the side of the face, commonly called Lupus, which has partly eat[en] away one his ears.’
Petition from the prisoner requesting that remaining sentence is remitted. Owing to his poor health he could not be transported; he has already served “two and a half years imprisonment...under the care of the surgeon”. He now sees the wickedness of his past life and wants the opportunity ‘to make reparation for his former crimes’.
