Description

Prisoner Name: Thomas Geary, of St Mary, Whitechapel, Middlesex.

Court and Date of Trial: Old Bailey, March 1850.

Crime: Assaulting a Policeman.

Initial Sentence: 18 months Imprisonment with hard labour.

Outcome: Nil.

Petitions and letters: Petitionary cover letter from J S Toole, accompanying the petition from the prisoner’s widowed mother [Mary] and nine respectable ratepayers of the parish seeking mitigation of the sentence. The petition claims that Thomas Geary, though present when the assault took place, was innocent of the crime, was of good character, and the chief support of his mother.
