Description

Folios 314-315: Daniel Ross, HMS Ariel, Spithead. Reports his arrival, encloses a copy of his orders from Captain John Barrett of HMS Minotaur. He was directed to escort any vessels from the convoy bound for Portsmouth, but when he hoisted the appropriate signal, no ships followed him. HMS Erebus was bound for the Humber and HMS Censor for Yarmouth and the River [Thames]. He though it appropriate to escort Censor as far as Yarmouth, but describes how in a heavy gale he collided with a fishing vessel out from Greenwich, resulting in some damage to his rigging. Some of the fishing vessel's crew managed to scramble aboard the Ariel, but he believes three must have perished.

Folio 316: enclosed with folios 314-315. Copy of orders from Captain John Barrett, HMS Minotaur, Hawke Roads, to Commander Daniel Ross, HMS Ariel, 1 December 1810. He is ordered to escort any vessels from the convoy bound for Portsmouth to their destination .
