Description

Captured ship: St Antonio de Pádua or St Anthony of Padua of Lisbon (master Antonio Murial).

History: a Portuguese merchant ship, bound from Le Havre via the Bay of Bourgneuf to Bergen, laden with salt; taken on 19/29 January 1692/3, about 12 leagues off Start Point by the privateer Frank (Thomas Winston commanding), and brought into Weymouth.

  • [CP 3]: claim of Antonio da Crasto of Lisbon;
  • [CP 4-CP 5]: inventory and commission of appraisement;
  • [CP 6]: abstracts and translations from French, Italian, Latin and Portuguese of the 27 ship's papers.

Ships papers: SP 1- SP 27, including SP 10 a letter written by Murial after the capture, several other letters as mail in transit, a will from Martinique, and a baptismal certificate, a surgeon's list of medicines, Latin verses, and no 27, Murial's book of seamen's wages etc.

[Decision: condemned, 23 February 1693; then appealed]
