Description

Captured ship: Abigail (master Thomas Pattison).

an English merchant ship bound from [Newcastle?] to Rotterdam, laden with coals, taken on 2/12 March 1696, by the French privateer Bonne Esperance of Dunkirk (Nicolas Kiken commanding), retaken before 10/20 March 1696 by HMS Pearl ([Robert] Holmes commanding) and brought into Dover.

  • [CP 1]: covering letter from the Admiralty Office to Sir Charles Hedges, judge of the High Court of Admiralty, enclosing SP 1;
  • [CP 2]: claim of Thomas Cook and Robert Foster of Rotterdam for the ship and cargo, 27 April 1696.

SP 1: copy of the letter of marque of the Bonne Esperance, annotated.
