Description

Captured ship: Abigail of Boston (master John Barrell).

History: an American English merchant ship (brigantine, 90-100 tons, men), bound from Boston, Massachusetts to London, laden with sugar, molasses, logwood, whale oil [train oil], cotton, pelts and braziletto wood taken on 18/28 August 1692 off Cape Clear, Ireland, by two French privateers and escorted in for St Malo, retaken (with some of the original crew) on 21/31 August 1692 near Guernsey by the privateers Jersey Sloop (John Maugier commanding), Guernsey Sloop (John Stephens commanding), and Swallow (John Tupper commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

  • [CP 2 -CP 4]: attestation and claim of John Brooks of London, enclosing a letter (capture narrative) sent from Barrell in Guernsey;
  • [CP 5]: allegation;
  • [CP 6 -CP 10, in reverse order]; commission of appraisement and detailed appraisements of the fur pelts and skins (musquash, wolf, bear, racoon, mink, cat, fox, marten, otter, buck), and of the other cargo (in Guernsey French and in translation), and indenture for the delivery of the ship back to John Barrell;
  • [CP 11]: deposition of Maugier, from Boston;
  • [CP 12-CP 13]: petition to Queen Mary from Stepehen and Tupper, and order.

Ships papers:- SP 1-SP 2 a bill of lading and manifest sent in Barrell's letter to Brooks.
