Description

Captured ship: L'Espérance of Bayonne (master Pierre Larronde or La Ronde).

History: a French ship (120 tons, guns, 10 men, formerly the New England ship Cleveland (master William Robinson) taken by the French in early 1746 and sold at Bayonne), bound from Bayonne to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco, iron, skins and staves; taken on 1/12 July 1746 in latitude 44º by the privateer Dragon of Bristol (Thomas Elworthy commanding), and brought into Bristol.

  • [CP 6-CP 7]: attestation and claim on behalf of John Entwisle, Hugh Mathews, William Robinson and John Row merchants of Boston, New England; and a manifest of the cargo of tobacco on the Cleveland, bound from Patuaent [Patuxent, Maryland] to Liverpool, January 1746;
  • [CP 8]: allegation;
  • [CP 9-CP 10]: attestation as to papers, and abstract and translation of the 11 ship's papers.
