Captured ship: L'Espérance of Dunkirk (master Norbert Kempinck).
History: a French privateer, formerly Le Soleil (100 tons, 14 carriage guns, 40 men), bound (with two other ships) from Dunkirk to some place in Scotland carrying 21 [Jacobite] gentlemen, 66 soldiers and 1 woman, and laden with cloth for soldiers' clothes, and soldiers' tents, and with brandy, burgundy and snuff; taken on 21 November/2 December 1745 off Winterton Ness by HMS Sheerness (William Bully commanding), and brought into Dover.
