Captured ship: Swallow of Guernsey (master Thomas Effard).
History: a British privateer (lugger); taken on 18 July 1781 by the privateer Harlequin (Joseph Fayrer commanding), and brought into Liverpool.
The Swallow was capturing the French snow Le Ruse of St Brieux (commander Alexander Louvrier), and the master Thomas Effard made a contract with another privateer, the Harlequin (Joseph Fayrer commanding), to be escorted to the nearest British port. Instead the Harlequin turned on the Swallow as being a smuggler, confined Effard and brought the Swallow into Liverpool : see HCA 32/444/2.
