Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Salem (master Simon Byrne).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 80 tons), laden with liquors, salt; taken on 28 October 1781 off Cape Charles, Virginia by the loyalist privateer Resolution (John Robinson commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to [unknown].

Court papers numbered CP 1:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Robinson v The brigantine Salem and her cargo, 14 November 1781.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: log book or journal, pp1-3 for 21-26 October 1781; pp4-5 for 28 October-2 November 1781 (after capture).

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2 (large pencil numbers): log added from HCA 30/734 in May 2023. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
