Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Salamander (master Isaiah Keel).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 75 tons, 4 guns, 15 men) bound from Portsmouth, Virginia to St Kitts or Cadiz, laden with tobacco; taken on 12 December 1782 off the Capes of Virginia by the loyalist privateer Delaney (Matthew Mangan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands or to Spain

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Murphy, 18 December 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Mangan v The schooner Salamander and her cargo, 18 December 1782;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Benjamin Riddick, mate, of Virginia, 20 December 1782 ;
  • [CP 4]: affidavit as to the poor condition of the prize, by Murphy, 18 December 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5E:-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Wills Cowper & Co, , 6 December 1782;
  • SP 2: clearance from Norfolk, Virginia, for Cadiz, 6 December 1782;
  • SP 3: bill of health, 6 December 1782;
  • SP 4: ship pass, 6 December 1782;
  • SP 5: letter from Wills Cowper & Co, Suffolk, Virginia, to Messrs Antony Somersall & Son, St Kitts, with instructions to purchase of return cargo (especially as to any British prize goods available), 10 December 1782, enclosing SP 5A-SP5E, invoices of cargo, list of goods wanted, and bills of lading.
