Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Rouilhac of Bordeaux (master Pierre Bonalogue, owners Messrs Reculès de Basmarein, Raimbaux & Cie).

History: a French merchant ship (brigantine 90 or 140 tons, 2 guns, 11 men) bound from Virginia to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco; taken on 25 August 1778 off Cape Charles, Virginia by HMS Richmond (John Lewis Gidoin commanding) and HMS Amazon (Maximilian Jacobs commanding) and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Fawsett, gunner, 2 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Jacobs v The brigantine Rouilhac and her cargo, 2 September 1778;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions of Pierre Bonalogue of Bordeaux, and Simon Pierre Renaudet of 'St Ange' [Saintonge?] but claiming to be a British subject, second captain, 10-12 September 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: clearance from Northampton, 17 August 1778;
  • SP 2: bill of lading, 10 August 1778;
  • SP 3: muster roll, 14 August 1778;
  • SP 4: ship's pass from Bordeaux to Martinique, 12 August 1777;
  • SP 5: wrapper.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-7; Ship's papers: 8-12 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
