Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Rover (commander James Barr).

Capture history: an American privateer (170 tons, 24 guns, 72 men) bound on a cruise; taken on 20 June 1781 in Boston Bay in latitude 41°30'N, by HMS Medea (Henry Duncan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Smith, second lieutenant, 4 July 1781 ;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Duncan v The Rover, 4 July 1781;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of James Barr, 5 July 1781.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-5 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
