Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Little Porga of Newbury (commander William Armstrong).

Capture history: an American merchant ship with commission (112 tons, 8 guns, 31 men) bound from Newburyport, Massachusetts to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco, sugar and cotton; taken on 3 November 1781 in latitude 39°10'N, longitude 41°20'W by the privateer Guernsey (Edward Conyers commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-5) brought in by Edward Conyers, 19 November 1781;
  • [CP 2]: two depositions of William Armstrong of Newburyport (master and part owner), Joseph Buckley of Havriel [Haverhill] near Newburyport, mariner (mate), and commissioners' affidavit, taken at St Peter Port, Guernsey, 19 November 1781.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5:-

  • SP 1: [wanting];
  • SP 2: crew list and agreement, with receipts for pay on the back;
  • SP 3: clearance bond, with descriptions of Armstrong and Buckley on the reverse, Newburyport, 20 October 1781;
  • SP 4: bill of health, Newburyport, 20 October 1781.
  • SP 5: [wanting].
