Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Little Sue of Charleston (commander Clement Conyers).

Capture history: an American merchant ship with a commission (sloop, 30 tons, 6 guns, 2 swivels, 15 men, 5 passengers) bound from St Croix, Danish West Indies, to Charleston, South Carolina, laden with rum, sugar, salt, dry goods; taken on 15 June 1778 at Charleston Bar in latitude 32°N, longitude 77°W by the loyalist privateer Enterprize (Daniel Squier commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Jolly, 1 July 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Squier v The sloop Little Sue and her cargo, 1 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John RIvers, common seaman of Charleston, 2 July 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (South Carolina papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Thomas Savage and Samuel Stone, 31 March 1778;
  • SP 2: clearance, 1 April 1778;
  • SP 3: Danish privateer commission, 30 May 1778;
  • SP 4: lists of labour costs ("negro hire"), etc.
