Folios 504-505: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 14 April. David Wheeler, born in Liverpool, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 7 April as an Able Seaman. He said he was Mate of the April, but had no documents. He was taken on shore at night. James Kairns, born in Ormskirk, entered with Lieutenant Rees on 6 April as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for Isaac Lewis. He was perfectly sober when examined. The name of Robert Williams does not appear in the books. He returns the enclosure. Reports that Stephen Richards, whose discharge was ordered in the letter of 19 April, sailed from Liverpool in HMS Gluckstadt on 16 April for Plymouth. Also sends the weekly return of men raised at Liverpool.
Folios 506-507: enclosure with folios 504-505. Petition dated 17 April 1809 from Judith Wheeler, 25 New Quay, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Petition for the release of her son, David Wheeler, recently arrived from Nassau as mate of the ship April. The Owner, Mr John Sloss, has made an application in respect of David Wheeler. Requests his discharge, and asks that he is not sent on foreign service to allow her time to raise 2 Landsmen as substitutes.
Folios 508-509: enclosure with folios 504-505. Letter dated 19 April 1809 from John Nodin, Spring Garden, [Liverpool], to The Admiralty. Request for the discharge of James Kairns, Private of the Bolton Regiment of Local Militia, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher, certified as such by the Adjutant of the Regiment. James Kairns is a poor Weaver, tricked by crimps into volunteering as a Landsman substitute, and was sent on 15 April on HMS Gluckstadt to Plymouth. He and his wife are willing to repay the money in exchange for his discharge. or will produce a Landsman substitute.
Folio 510: enclosure with folios 508-509. Certificate dated 14 April 1809 by ? name, Adjutant of the Bolton Regiment of Local Militia, confirming that James Kairns enrolled in the Bolton Command, Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher, on 31 October 1808.
Folio 511: enclosure with folios 504-505. Weekly return of men raised in Liverpool 15-22 April 1809. Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer.
