Description

Folios 502-503: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 17 April relating to the pressing of men represented by Admiral Sir Roger Curtis as foreigners. Joseph Anthony, born in Jamaica, and employed in contraband trade on the Spanish main, which he did not deny. He had no Protection. Joseph Garcia, pressed by Lieutenant Clarke as a native of Barbados, had no Protection, but he has been discharged according to orders dated 10 April. He was discharged into HMS Piercer and has sailed from Liverpool. Lewis Sajlva alias John Selby, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans as a deserter from HMS Princess after acknowledging that he was John Selby, born in Falmouth. Frank Vaughan, a man from Guernsey, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans and claimed by the Master as such with no proof to the contrary. Sego Sam, said to be a native of Bombay, with fluent English, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke having belonged for some time to an Indiaman, and also a Man of War. Joseph Paschow was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke by request from, and given up by, the Portugese Consul. John Scopeland, born in the Shtlands, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees, and then entered as a Volunteer. Francis Policia was pressed on information that he was from Gibraltar and then entered as a Volunteer. Paschal Brown was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on information that he was from Gibraltar. He arrived on the Mary of Gibraltar and had no Protection. Captain Horton observes that he did not pay any Information Money for the men who he felt would not be retained, apart from John Selby, as he was proven to be a deserter and admitted that he was a British subject.
