Description

Folios 472-473: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 14 April. John Drimmie, born in Upholland, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 2 April as an Able Seaman. He was Mate on the Falmouth, but the Master had died during the voyage and his name was substituted on the Register as Master. The vessel has now been sold, and Captain Holland was appointed Master on 25 March. William Coupe, born in Bolton, entered with Lieutenant Evans on 6 April as a Landsman Volunteer (second substitute for Samuel McGill). He declared he was not an apprentice. James Norris, born at Worsley, entered at the same time as a Landsman Volunteer, (1st substitute for Patrick Laffing). He declared he was not an apprentice. George Yates, born in Holiwell, entered at the same time as a Landsman Volunteer (2nd substitute for Patrick Laffing). He declared he was not an apprentice. Richard Thomas, alias Thomason, born in Anderton, offered himself as a substitute at the same time but was refused. He entered himself as a Boy Volunteer and declared he was not an apprentice. The four were brought from Manchester by a Serjeant who stated he had engaged them as substitutes. Titus Henshall, born in Macclesfield, entered with Lieutenant Clarke on 21 March as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for William Johnson. he declared he was not an apprentice. Hugh Thomas, born in Wales, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 9 April as an Able Seaman. He was taken on shore at night, drinking in a Public House. He said he was Mate of the Two Brothers. James Taylor, born in Rochdale, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 25 March. He had no Protection but said he was employed on the Two Brothers flat, for which 2 men were already protected. Richard Hamilton, born in Lithgow, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 9 April. He was taken from a bad house on Bridge Street at night. He said he was Mate of the Isabella. Stephen Richards, born in Cornwall, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 30 March. He produced a discharge from the Cornwall Militia dated 16 August 1803, and a certificate stating that he was apprentice to Thomas Clark, owner of the ship Vine, but no indenture was produced. He returns the enclosures. Notes that HMS Gluckstadt sailed for Plymouth with the supernumeraries from HMS Princess.

Folios 474-475: enclosure with folios 472-473. Letter dated 11 April 1809 from E Cattenough, 88 Frederick Street, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Asks whether 2 Landsmen will be accepted as substitutes for John Drimmie.

Folios 476-477: enclosure with folios 472-473. Letter dated 12 April 1809 from Joseph Daltery, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Sends the enclosed affidavit and petition relating to James Taylor, on board HMS Gluckstadt and expected to sail. Requests a discharge for the man.

Folios 478-479: enclosure with folio 476. Letter dated 12 April 1809 from James Gerard, Mayor, Borough of Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Affidavit stating that Thomas Walker, of Rochdale, Lancashire, has appeared before James Gerard, Justice of the Peace, and sworn under oath that James Taylor, his servant, is not a seaman and was only left on board the flat Two Brothers to protect his master's property, in the absence of Timothy Horsfall, the Master, who has a regular Protection from the Impress Service at Liverpool and was under the care of a Surgeon at the time.

Folios 480-481: enclosure with folio 476. Petition dated 10 April 1809 from 12 named men to The Officers of the Impress Service, Liverpool, sworn before Thomas Drake, Justice of the Peace, Lancashire. Petition for the release of James Taylor, an employee of Mr Walker, Corn Dealer, of Rochdale. Signed by Charles Smith, Beckwith Smith, Jonathan Beswick, Jonathan Entwistle, John Walmsley, Bing Smith, James Holt, Thomas Vavasowie, Thomas Wooding, Smith ? Henwall, Francis Holt, James Royds.

Folios 482-483: enclosure with folios 472-473. Letter dated 14 April 1809 from S Stephens, Mayfield, to The Admiralty. Writing on behalf of one of his constituents, Captain Thomas Clark of St Ives, relating to the pressing of Stephen Richards. His indenture and protection are enclosed [not present]. Requests their return. Also encloses Captain Clark's letter.

Folios 484-485: enclosure with folios 482-483. Letter dated 10 April 1809 from Thomas Clark, from the brig Vine, Liverpool, to Samuel Stephens, Devonshire Street, Portland Place, London. Requesting support in obtaining the discharge of his apprentice Stephen Richards.

Folio 486: enclosure with folios 472-473. Petition dated 13 April 1809 by Jonathan Lyon, Master of the galliot Two Brothers, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Petition for the release of his Mate, Hugh Thomas. He is required in order for the vessel to discharge her cargo.

Folio 487: enclosure with folios 472-473. Affidavit dated April 1809 by Thomas Golightly, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool. Certifies that Jonathan Lyon swore a statement that his vessel arrived from Dublin on 9 April and the Mate was pressed while on shore at night.

Folios 488-489: enlcosure with folios 472-473. Undated petition by Peter Ainsworth and David Bentley of Haulgh in the parish of Bolton, Lancashire to The Admiralty. Petition for the release of their apprentice Bleachers: William Coup, bound according to the indenture dated 1 April 1804; James Norris, indenture dated 1 March 1806; Richard Thomason, indenture dated 27 November 1805; and George Yates, indenture dated 13 January 1807.

Folio 490: enclosure with folios 472-473. Undated petition by Peter Bailey, Silk Weaver, and Edward Henshall, Silkman, both of Macclesfield, to The Admiralty. Petition for the release of Titus Henshall, son of Edward Henshall and bound as apprentice to Peter Bailey.

Folio 491: enclosure with folio 489. Letter dated 13 April 1809 from David Browns, Macclesfield, to The Admiralty. Cover letter for folio 489.

Folios 492-493: enclosure with folios 472-473. Letter dated 14 April 1809 from John Nodin, Spring Garden, [Liverpool], to the Admiralty. Request for the discharge of Richard Hamilton. Mate of the Isabella of Liverpool.
