Description

Folios 529-530: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty query of 9 October, says that William Stafford and James Birch do appear to be the apprentices mentioned in the indentures. The first seems to have been at sea, the latter is a young man who has by his own admission been on a voyage to East Africa.

Folios 531-532: enclosure with folios 529-530. Letter dated 7 October 1800 by R. Kirkpatrick, Liverpool, saying that James Birch is the apprentice of Thomas Pollett, indentured 31 August 1795, who deserted his master in Manchester and came to Liverpool where he entered on board a merchant ship. A warrant was issued for him but too late, he had already sailed. Upon his return, about a week ago, he had been impressed - the indentures and the warrant are enclosed [just the warrant now present] and asks for his discharge.

Folio 533: enclosure with folios 531-532: Warrant dated 4 October 1800 for James Birch, executed by his master Thomas Pollitt, a hatter.

Folios 534-535: Letter dated 7 October 1800 by R. Kirkpatrick, Liverpool, saying that William Stafford, apprentice to Messrs Wilson and Lewis of Liverpool, had deserted his post but was found 'wandering about the streets' and impressed. His masters issued a warrant for him. He encloses the indentures [not now present] and the warrant, and asks for the young man's discharge.

Folio 536: enclosure with folios 534-535. Warrant dated 7 October 1800 for William Stafford, issued by his employers William Quirk and William Wilson, saying he deserted their service and had become 'idle and disorderly'.
