Description

1 individual petition (Colonel Powell, committing magistrate) and 1 collective petition (24 people from Hereford) with accompanying letter from Robert Price MP on behalf of Henry Williams convicted at Hereford Quarter Sessions in January 1831 for sending a threatening letter to John Monkhouse. Grounds for clemency: not in sound state of mind, did not realise consequences of actions, elderly parents unable to make these facts known at trial, previous good conduct although history of being odd character, difference of opinion at trial as to whether sentence should be 7 or 14 years transportation. Initial sentence: 14 years' transportation. Annotated: nil. NP 43
