1 individual petition (Samuel Walter) and 2 collective petitions (18 people from Manchester, Bolton and Prestwich, Lancashire and 12 people) on behalf of William Wilbraham convicted at Lancashire Quarter Sessions Salford in October 1830 for receiving stolen goods, property of Thomas Taylor muslin manufacturer of Bolton. Gaoler's report: character bad, twice in custody on charges of receiving stolen goods. Grounds for clemency: aged mother and 3 young children will be left without support, has incurable illness, previous good character, Thomas Barlow and Ann Challener tried at same time for crime but they were acquitted, claims by James Wright who sentenced at same sessions that Wilbraham innocent, 3 people prepared to make affidavits that Wilbraham innocent, Barlow declared Wilbraham innocent before his death a year ago. Initial sentence: 14 years' transportation. Annotated: nil, should go abroad; nil in New South Wales, answered 7 October 1837. NP 41
