1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (22 people) on behalf of and 1 individual petition (Joseph White, prosecutor) against Alfred Townsend, milkman convicted at Bath Quarter Sessions on 3 January 1831 for assault against Joseph White, farmer. Grounds for clemency: sister and father dependent on him, committed assault after provocation from White, could produce no witnesses at trial, too severe a sentence. Grounds against clemency: from a bad family who might attack victim's cattle, only signed collective petition through fear of reprisals. Initial sentence: 3 months' imprisonment and fined £5.
