Description

1 individual petition with 2 testimonials to mother's good character (Sarah Anne Thompson, the prisoner's mother) on behalf of William Thompson, japanner and burnisher convicted at the Old Bailey in February 1831 for stealing a coat, value £2. Gaoler's report: here before and convicted. Grounds for clemency: sole support for widowed mother with 5 young children, previous good character, be mixing with hardened criminals on hulks, would be offered work on release from prison. Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation. Annotated: nil. NP 32
