4 individual petitions (Mary Anne Davis) and 2 collective petitions (183 people from Presteigne, Radnorshire, Wales and 13 people, jurors) on behalf of John Taylor the younger, carpenter, convicted at Radnorshire Quarter Sessions, Presteigne on 7 January 1831 for sending a threatening letter to Edward Lee James, attorney. Gaoler's report: character very good, ordered to hulks. There are letters of support from Mr Briscoe MP and Harford Jones Brydge and a letter confirming exemplary conduct in Millbank Penitentiary. Grounds for clemency: young age, weak intellect, previous good character, first offence, unaware of seriousness of offence, never intended to carry out threat, distress of respectable family, family can provide employment if sentence reduced, claimed given severe sentence because father called magistrate 'a villain' after trial, good conduct in penitentiary. Initial sentence: 14 years' transportation. Annotated: ordered to penitentiary 3 June 1831, free pardon prepared 9 June 1834. NP 31
