8 individual petitions (1 from the prisoner and 7 from Matilda Dibble, the prisoner's mother) and 4 collective petitions (2 from 5 family; 85 people including jury and prosecutor; 7 people) on behalf of Frederick Smith convicted at the Old Bailey on 8 January 1831 for uttering a forged acceptance on a bill of exchange, property of Edward West. Grounds for clemency: respectable honest family who feel great distress at crime, previous good character, prisoner made improvident marriage without parent's consent which caused rift and led him to commit crime, led astray by others, prosecutor and jury recommended mercy, petitions after transportation mention good conduct in Van Diemens Land and need of support for family in England after deaths and loss of property in fire. Initial sentence: death commuted to life transportation. Annotated: considered at Report in Council 2 March 1831, nil. NP 30
