Office of Ordnance to Commissioner Nelson. We were asked whether there is any alteration in the manner of fitting the mortar beds on board ships and also for an inspection of the ships Cornwall and Severn, purchased by the Board for bomb vessels, so any alterations or improvements could be suggested. Colonel Congreve of the Royal Artillery is now at Portsmouth carrying on experiments on the Vesuvius bomb, the result of which will enable this Board to reply to the points raised. Are sending an extract of a letter from Colonel Congreve with the alterations made in the Vesuvius, to enable the mortars to be fixed at lower angles and ask for them to be returned after perusal.
