Extract letter from Colonel Congreve, Comptroller of the Royal Laboratory. As soon as we have made sufficient trial of the effect of firing the mortars on the ship, he will make a report. The alterations made have strengthened the ship and the mortars can be used at 45 degrees but opines it would be better to have 2 10-inch mortars instead of a 10-inch and a 13-inch, as the ship will then be lighter. In the course of the experiment, he will be able to ascertain the lowest angle the mortars can be fired, when the sea is rough.
