Description
Content
Folios 200-201. Letter from Thomas Dryden, Auditor, Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, replying to their letter of 17 September 1841. He explains that he refused to allow the payment of interest on the debt owed to Mr Ball [Nicholas Ball] by Tregony parish, because of a letter from the Commission to the clerk of the union, concerning a debt in Kea, which they said could not be legally discharged. Since then he has not allowed interest payment on a debt unless the money was borrowed under the authority of 59 Geo III c 12. The parish officers of Tregony are wrong to suppose he will not sanction payments of interest under any circumstances and cites an example in St Erme, where he allowed it. He will allow it in Tregony, if the parties involved can produce evidence that the Act was complied with. He asks for advice on how to act, if his approach is wrong. Annotated: former papers 8140; refer to Mr Lumley [[William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Paper Number: 8865/A/1841. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
