Folios 39-40. Letter from the Poor Law Commission to [William Stackhouse] of Trehane, Truro, giving their views on the new workhouse in Probus, in regard to: 1. sufficiency of the house, including numbers of paupers using the house compared with its capacity, beds to be in double tiers, 'children require half the room that adults do'; 2. classification and good management of paupers, including provisions for sick and children; 3. alterations and additions required, including division of eating room to keep men and women separate, provision of a school or work room for children and an enclosed work yard for the able bodied, also 'windows in each part of the building from which the other parts can be overlooked should be painted so as to prevent communication by eye'; present system of management; 4. alterations in management, including sale of cottages where paupers live rent free, no relief by payment of rent, labour rate and roundsman system to be stopped, restrictions on out relief, requirement for labour for the able bodied and arrangements for paying paupers. The Commissioners do not give an opinion on setting up a system of management for Probus alone, but cite the advantages of unions of parishes.
