Content
Folios 32-38. Report by W J Gilbert [William J Gilbert, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], concerning the new workhouse and the granting of relief in Probus. He includes details of the number of paupers, the number who would enter the workhouse and its capacity to accept them. He describes the facilities and recommends changes to the structure, use of rooms and sleeping arrangements. He considers the arrangements for the sick and children and reports the lack of a school room. He describes the system of out door relief and recommends changes. He includes details of management and states the need for a board of guardians. Annotated: brief comments through the report and a draft letter [to William Stackhouse of Trehane, Truro]. The Commissioners do not give an opinion on setting up a system of management, based on Probus alone, but they state the advantages of forming a union of parishes. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
