Description
Content
Folios 41-42. Letter from Robert Lampen, Vicar of Probus, but at present at St Andrew's Chapel House, Plymouth, [Devon], to the Poor Law Commission, concerning religious services in the Probus workhouse. In his absence his curate has begun weekly Church of England services there. However applications have been received from the Bryanites and Wesleyans to hold regular meetings in the workhouse. These have been granted under the Poor Law Amendment Act, on the grounds that sectarians have the same access to the workhouse as parish ministers. He disputes this interpretation of the law. He thinks that the beliefs of dissenting inmates must be 'proved' and that, while access to individual inmates by their religious teachers is beneficial, holding services is the sole prerogative of the parish minister. He fears a situation where 'the most discordant opinions might be publicly brought'. He seeks the guidance of the Commissioners in interpreting the law. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
