Description
Content
Folios 20-21. Letter from [Edmund Turner], Magistrate of Truro to the Poor Law Commission, concerning the distress caused to poor people who have to enter the poor house. He cites the examples of Ann Nichols, a widow and Jane Burton, unmarried, both elderly paupers in Kenwyn. Both lived with relatives and received relief out of the poor house. The overseers, by order of the select vestry, have stopped their weekly payment and ordered them into the poor house. He asks what can be done to prevent this 'moral degradation'. He notes page 20, clause 27 of the Poor Law Act, which allows two magistrates to order relief in a union of parishes, but assumes that this does not apply to a parish acting by itself. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
