Description
Content
Folios 17-18. Letter from Robert Lampen, Vicar of Probus, to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. He refers to his letter of 25 September 1834, in which he sought guidance on obtaining a loan to complete the building of the Probus workhouse. As his query has not been answered, he explains that the loan, not exceeding half a year's poor rate, would be charged on the parish rates, consistent with Section 24 of the Poor Law Amendment Act. Two thirds of the shilling rate on the actual value of property has been collected, but is hard on the rate payers, who are mostly paying the highest rate of rent and a loan would lessen the burden. He asks if the loan can be taken out without collecting the remaining third of the added rate. He refers to the Commission's communication on the union of Probus with other parishes and is confident that nothing will be decided that will be detrimental to the parish. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
