- Folio 8. Letter from George George, Vestry Clerk, St Just [in Roseland], to the Poor Law Commission. He informs them of the difficulty in his parish of obtaining poor rates from small houses. The occupiers' income is casual, making it impossible to assess fairly who should pay, creating discontent and adding to the burdens of the rate payers, as many of these properties make no contribution. It was hoped that the insertion of a clause in the Bill, sent to the overseers by the House of Commons, would remove this problem and the vestry hope the Commissioners have been given powers to deal with it. They apologise for the delay in making their return, which was due to the late delivery of the Commissioners' letter, by the Post Office. Annotated: with related queries from Cornwall.
