Description
Content
Folios 9-10. Letter from George Cornish, Vicar of Kenwyn and Kea, to the Poor Law Commission, including a sketch map of the two parishes showing two poor houses and an almshouse in Kea. He explains that the parishes are united in one benefice, but are otherwise separate. He states the replies from Kea parish officers to the Commission's questions are on an accompanying paper [not included]. In relation to question four, the poor house near the old church is untenanted. He has converted two rooms into a chapel for the weekly service. The second poor house, built on open common 10 years before, has no wall around it and no governor. Although subject to the control of the select vestry, neither he nor his curate can get the children to Sunday school. It has become 'a nursery of vice'. The alms house has 17 'respectable old women' as inmates. Part of Kea within Kenwyn has few poor and no workhouse. Annotated: to acknowledge and thank for information which will be referred to the assistant Commissioner. With related queries from Kenwyn, Truro. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
