1 individual petition (Charles Thompson, a magistrate and prisoner's former employer) on behalf of John Hodges convicted at the Kent Quarter Sessions at Rochester in January 1831 for embezzlement. Grounds for clemency: excellent character while employed both by Charles Thompson as helper in his brewery and by his late father as groom and coachman, no one at trial to speak for his good character, wife and 2 children to support, petitioner willing to employ prisoner when liberated, already spent 4 years on prison ship awaiting transportation where conduct been good, free pardon requested to restore good name to neighbours. Initial sentence: 7 year's transportation. Gaoler's report: character good, conduct on board Fortitude good. Annotated: free pardon. AV 42
